Doncaster Health Atlas
The Doncaster Health Atlas is a resource that assists exploration of public health determinants in Doncaster. The data is split into themes which align closely with the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) and the 2010 Community Profiles, these being;
- Housing
- Education
- Economy
- Environmental Issues
- Crime
- Social Care
- Lifestyle & Risk Factors
- Mortality, Cancer Registrations, Cancer Screening
- Disease Prevalence
- Hospital Activity
There are several options for viewing the data;
Single Map – This allows the user to map the data for each indicator and make comparisons between communities.
Double Map – This allows a user to look at the relationship between two different indicators.
Area Profile – This is a spine chart display showing all of the indicators on one page and a comparison to the Doncaster average. It also allows comparison between two chosen areas (not currently available, this will be added once complete).
Funnel Plot – This is a visual representation of the significance of the data in relation to the Doncaster average (not currently available, this will be added once complete).
A user guide for the atlas is available via the links with the maps.
To view the data you need to have Adobe Flash Player version 9 or above installed on your PC. This can be downloaded from the Adobe website. In some circumstances administrator rights will be required to successfully install the viewer. The atlas applications should be used with a broadband connection. If an application appears slow to respond to user requests it may be worthwhile returning to the application at a time when there is less congestion online. When linking to the atlases you will need to give some time to allow the pages to form.
The interactive data mapping and visualisation tool we have used to produce the Doncaster Health Atlas is called InstantAtlasTM.

The Doncaster Health Atlas and Community Profiles - Background and Historical Records
Communities for Doncaster were defined in 2003 so that natural, real communities could be used as a basis for meaningful public health profiling across the Doncaster population. They were geographically defined by staff in what was Doncaster’s Public Health Intelligence Unit (NHS), in consultation with the Neighbouhood Renewal and Community Development colleagues of the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council (ref).
Since 2003 there have been multiple reports, web facilities, profiles that have used these definitions. Notably the 2004 community database, as retained. Also recorded are the presentations made available through older versions of InstantAtlasTM (single map, double map). Please only use these older links if it is useful for you to have comparator data sets. For the latest information use the InstantAtlasTM links in previous paragraphs.
